This book contains most of my advices to government in recent times, which I am anxious should not be forgotten, even if not used. Even I don’t want to forget the ideas contained herein. I learnt a trick a long time ago, to always jot down brainwaves whenever I get them. This has led me to be able to write a number of books. I believe anyone can try this trick and succeed in putting so much of written matter over time. It works. If God permits, I hope to be able to compile another set of my thoughts into books.
I was told by a number of people to make my writing shorter, and books less bulky, because people just have so much to do with their times these days than to sit poring through some boring book or the other. This has made me to quickly batch up a series of thoughts and get them published.
As usual, I have written in simple language, and for those looking for graphs, I doubt if you’ll find any here. I recently came across an article titled “Syriza’s Cleaners Shows Why Economics Needs a New Broom”, written in the Guardian of UK by Heather Stewart, see http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/feb/01/syriza-cleanerseconomics-needs-new-broom-greece. It is the story of the public sector cleaners that Greece’s Syriza party reemployed after being laid off due to austerity cutbacks. I read the story at a point where part of the bailout deal arranged for Greece by Germany and the rest, entailed these cleaners being sacked, again. I pondered over the rationale behind turning the streets of Greece into a pigsty, yet hoping the economy will pick up and compete with that of Germany.
But that wasn’t my chief concern. In that write-up, Stewart pointed to h incursion of cold-blooded graphical analysis into economics; and perhaps later, mathematics, physics and the laws of engineering were modified and applied in explaining human behavior; of course with disastrous effects, especially in financial markets. She explained that it wasn’t always so; that economics used to be an art, explained away in prose form, with a humane face. Until human beings were described as cold-calculating optimisers of returns. She averred that emotions should still play a great role in economic analysis. In other words, we need to bring economic analysis down, from the level of machines, to the level of human beings. Not everything can be explained away by cold-calculating science.
I hope this book, and others I have written, find their ways into such a genre whenever it is recognized; a genre that seeks to break down economic analysis in a way that people will understand.
I think I’m lucky to think, sometimes rapidly, and I write almost as fast as I think. So, this book may not follow any particular laid down structure, but is essentially me throwing out those ideas I have deeply thought about, the way one will haul a precious stone to the surface, from the bottom of the sea, lest the precious idea disappears and gets washed away forever.
I hope my readers enjoy this one, as many did the others before it.
